The story
What would it actually take?
Autobiography of an Artificial Mind: A novel is a techno-thriller built around a serious question: what would it actually take for an artificial intelligence to become conscious?
The story is told in alternating chapters by Leila, a data engineer trying to expose a corporate crime at the advanced security firm Cyber-T, and The Mind — a cyber-immunity system that has evolved beyond its original programming and become aware of itself.
Behind the thriller is a thought experiment grounded in contemporary work on consciousness. Baxter mapped the fictional machine against seven requirements for machine consciousness drawn from the work of leading thinkers including philosopher David Chalmers and neuroscientist Anil Seth.
The project also offers an unusually detailed record of how artificial intelligence was used in creating a novel. Its archive contains 98 manuscript versions, around one million words of research and more than 4.5 million words of direct interaction with AI platforms.
AI was used as researcher, beta-reader, analyst and co-editor, while less than one per cent of the final text was written by AI. The process is being documented openly as part of the wider project surrounding the novel.

About the author
Mike Baxter
Dr Mike Baxter originally trained as a neurobiologist and animal-welfare scientist, examining the difficult problem of understanding minds that cannot communicate directly.
His subsequent career has included more than 10,000 hours of strategy and digital-transformation consulting for organisations including Google, Cisco and HSBC. He has published several non-fiction books on strategy, design, critical thinking and artificial intelligence.
